Choi Woolga's Colors and Spirit - M, GALERNEAU

Until recently, Korea had been a land of virgin as far as the contemporary art was concerned.

Now, Korea is no longer a land of virgin.

Since several years ago, many artists enviable in terms of talent or imagination have been born beside the river of art or in Europe.

Choi Woolga who is still young as artist has a long background of his own for his creative art.

First, he implemented some realistic fine art. His works in mid-80's hint that he was an Expressionist.

The characters deformed and colorful represented his inner pain.

However, his grammar of colors testifies to the artist's will to transcend his own expressions.

It is believed that he will approach such a stage at a very rapid speed.

In 1989, we could see the endpoint of his desire or transcendence.

He would use a new technique with wide and heavy lines and hard matiere, while choosing the blue color tone highlighting the color of fire as well as the palette dominated by the color tone in an effort to create a true form of Fauvism, Pointillism and Expressionism combined.

At the moment, a Neo-Fauvism movement was exploding in Europe.

He would not fall into a taste given free out of his challenge but reach the same results as theirs by using his intuition into the modern spirit.

However, such violent and unstable period would not last long.

It is expected that Choi Woolga will continue to develop his technique steadily by using more pleasant themes, loving the nature and focusing on the human will in the nature.

The colors he uses are more pleasant, changing into purer ones.

He has changed from oil paintings to acryl and crayon paintings on the canvas, and such a technique is his favorite one to unfold the vision of objects more favorably.

Choi Woolga reflects his own cognition on the fragile world of his works. First of all, he pastes paper on his canvas and thereby, uses it as a scribbling board like playful children's ground. Representation of children's world is both recreation and play for him.

Through such plays, he learns about children's life.

Colors which seem to sing, negation of communicative signs, concern about reality, and the works attached to the scribbling board (nostalgic media), or the works surrounded by such symbolic TV screen (modern media)... Choi Woolga depicts his own age with them.

The themes and aesthetics of his works prove such attempt of his.

Since his works are already there, they are immersed enough in themselves to talk about the contemporariness.
